Rotterdam Shootings: Gunman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

In September 2023, the Dutch city of Rotterdam was shaken by a series of shootings that left three people dead and one seriously injured. The perpetrator, Fouad Lakhlili, a 32-year-aged medical student at Erasmus University, was apprehended and has since been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025.

Timeline of the Attacks

The shootings began around 2:10 PM CEST on September 28, 2023, with reports of a fire and explosions at a residence on Heiman Dullaertplein in Delfshaven, Rotterdam. These sounds were later determined to be gunfire. Shortly after, at approximately 2:25 PM, a shooting was reported at the Erasmus University Medical Center on Rochussenstraat, an education center for medical students. The gunman as well set part of the hospital on fire during the attack.

The Victims

A 39-year-old mother was killed in her home on Heiman Dullaertplein, and her 14-year-old daughter later succumbed to her injuries. An additional fatality occurred at the Erasmus University Medical Center.

The Perpetrator

Fouad Lakhlili, born February 11, 1991, in Utrecht, was identified as the perpetrator. He was a student at Erasmus University medical school and had a prior conviction for animal cruelty. Lakhlili was arrested under the hospital’s helipad while wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a firearm. Prior to the shootings, hospital officials had requested a psychological evaluation to assess his suitability to become a doctor.

Investigation and Aftermath

Following the arrest, a period of fear gripped Rotterdam as investigators sought to determine the motive behind the indiscriminate attacks. As of January 3, 2025, authorities had not established a connection between the victims. The shooter had not made any statements regarding his motives.
