Russell Brand Denies All Charges as Defense Begins at London Trial

British comedian and actor Russell Brand took the stand at London’s Southwark Crown Court, denying charges involving six female complainants and testifying that not a single person with relevant information agreed to speak on his behalf. Brand, appearing as the defense’s first witness after being called by his lawyer Ian Winter KC, answered “No” when asked if he committed each of the alleged offenses spanning from 1999 to 2009. The trial follows prosecution arguments over the preceding two weeks in which prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC characterized Brand as a “predator,” adding that he was “ruthless and calculated” with an “indiscriminate and voracious” desire for sexual contact.

Brand told the court that his marriage to Katy Perry in 2010 brought about “staggering fame,” and he described his life as entirely consumed by the ongoing legal proceedings. Outside the courthouse, accompanied by his wife Laura Gallacher, Brand told journalists he was grateful for a system that can accommodate truth and justice. Under U.K. law, all six female plaintiffs receive automatic lifelong anonymity.

Judge Reduces Indecent Assault Charge Over Insufficient Evidence

Prior to Brand taking the witness stand, Mr Justice Bennathan reduced one of the original charges against him on Tuesday. The judge lowered an indecent assault charge to attempted indecent assault, informing the jurors that insufficient evidence existed regarding an alleged 2001 incident involving an MTV employee. The case initially comprised three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one indecent assault charge. Brand maintains his innocence across all charges.

The defense proceedings followed weeks of testimony from accusers, co-workers, and a former personal assistant. During the session, jurors also heard recorded police interviews from between September 2023 and July 2025 in which Brand read prepared statements. In those interviews, Brand stated that he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity, though he acknowledged a highly promiscuous past involving encounters in countless locations, including party toilet cubicles, which he argues have been unfavorably reframed decades later following media reports.

Specific Allegations Addressed on the Witness Stand

During Wednesday’s testimony, Brand addressed the specific allegations brought by the complainants. Addressing a 2004 Soho party accusation where a third complainant alleged he squeezed her breasts and orally raped her in a toilet, Brand denied grabbing her breasts and stated the toilet was unsuitable for that purpose. He similarly denied allegations involving a Capital Radio workplace encounter in 2004 or 2005 and an alleged 2009 incident at his home involving a fifth complainant, asserting that she did not say no or tell him to stop, and that removing his condom was a consensual act.

Trial Continuation and Legal Framework

The trial is scheduled to continue on Thursday at Southwark Crown Court and could last up to six weeks. Court proceedings center on allegations from six women concerning events between 1999 and 2009, which came to light following investigative reports and a television documentary broadcast in 2023. As the defense continues laying out its case, the jury is tasked with evaluating competing testimonies from both the prosecution witnesses and the defendant.
