State TV Broadcasts Empty Podiums Amid Opposition Absence
Ahead of the vote, state television broadcasted an empty studio during a scheduled debate in Ryazan, located 122 miles southeast of Moscow. Russia-1 anchor Elizaveta Dorokhina informed viewers that all six registered candidates in the city failed to attend, leaving three empty podiums on either side of the studio before cutting to a commercial break, as reported by CNN. Critical political opposition is effectively nonexistent in the current electoral environment, with opposing figures either barred from running or having fled the country.
Electoral Scope and the United Russia Majority
Voters are casting ballots to elect 450 members of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, alongside regional and municipal heads. The United Russia party, which backs President Vladimir Putin and has dominated domestic politics for over two decades, is projected to retain control. The elections unfold against a backdrop of increasing social tensions and internet restrictions during the fifth year of the war in Ukraine. According to CNN, Ukrainian long-range drone strikes targeting Russian territory and oil refineries have generated fuel shortages and long queues of cars in major cities, disrupting the domestic economy.
