Russian-Backed Parcel Bomb Plot Across Europe

A coordinated terrorist operation involving self-igniting parcels sent across Europe has been linked to operatives believed to be working on behalf of Russia’s secret service. The plot, which impacted the UK, Germany, Poland, and involved test shipments to the US and Canada, has resulted in multiple investigations and the charging of 22 suspects.

The Parcel Bomb Campaign

Authorities launched a joint probe after a series of parcels exploded or caught fire in the UK, Germany, and Poland in July 2024. One package detonated inside a UK warehouse, while another ignited at Leipzig Airport in Germany shortly before being loaded onto an aircraft. In Poland, a package caught fire inside a transport truck Mirror.

Investigation and Suspects

The investigation, conducted jointly by police forces from the UK, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Poland, identified 22 individuals believed to be acting on behalf of Russia’s military intelligence service Mirror. Fifteen people have been charged with terrorism offences in Lithuania BBC.

Lithuanian prosecutors allege the suspects used delivery companies DHL and DPD to send four packages containing explosives hidden in cosmetics containers from Vilnius, Lithuania BBC. The devices were triggered by electronic timers concealed within vibrating massage pillows BBC.

The suspects, including citizens of Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, were recruited and received instructions through an online messaging platform, with payments often made in cryptocurrencies Mirror.

Connections to Russian Military Intelligence

Lithuanian authorities have stated the plot was coordinated by individuals with links to Russian military intelligence services BBC. Investigators believe the parcel bombs were “dry runs” aimed at sabotaging flights to the US and Canada BBC, CNN.

Two individuals, Daniil Gromov (using the alias Jaroslav Mikhailov) and Tomas Dovgan Stabacinskas, have been identified as coordinators of the scheme and were as well linked to an arson attack on an Ikea store in Vilnius in 2024 CNN.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings
