Documentary Maker Files Complaint After Radio Interview Deemed ‘Racist’

Documentary maker Julie Ng has filed an official complaint with the NPO (Netherlands Public Broadcasting) following a radio interview on NPO Radio 2’s “De Wild in de Middag” with Ruud de Wild and Lauren Verster, which she described as “racist.” The interview centered around her film, ‘Meer Dan Babi Pangang’ (More Than Babi Pangang), but Ng alleges the conversation devolved into jokes about Chinese food.

The Interview and the Complaint

Ng’s documentary explores the success and potential decline of Chinese-Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands, examining themes of cultural adaptation, identity and perception through the lens of her father’s restaurant. Although, during the radio segment, titled ‘China Journaal’ and introduced with Chinese music, the discussion reportedly focused heavily on the ingredients and appearance of babi pangang.

Verster questioned the “dubious” nature of the fluorescent color of the sauce, asking Ng about the amount of sugar used and suggesting it might contain the same substance used in CT scans. De Wild echoed this sentiment. Ng felt her film’s broader themes were ignored, and the conversation was reduced to stereotypes about Chinese cuisine.

In her complaint, Ng accuses the radio hosts of “racism, reducing [her] to a caricature, and perpetuating outdated stereotypes and clichés.”

Public Reaction and Apology

The interview sparked controversy and criticism from listeners. Following the backlash, De Wild and Verster reportedly contacted Ng to offer an apology.

Broader Discussion on Stereotyping

The incident has also prompted discussion about respectful representation in media. National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism, Rabin Baldewsingh, commented that while the situation was disrespectful and stereotyping, labeling it as outright racism could dilute the term’s meaning and hinder those who have genuinely experienced it.
