Saab Reveals Swedish Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle Demonstrator Specs
Saab disclosed technical specifications for a large uncrewed underwater vehicle (LUUV) demonstrator on October 20, 2026, according to a report by Janes. Developed alongside the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, known as Försvarets materielverk or FMV, the system measures seven meters in length with a diameter of 1.4 meters. The platform weighs 6.5 tonnes and features an internal payload space measuring 800 by 800 by 800 millimeters.
The project prioritizes rapid capability demonstration over a specific vehicle size, Peter Karlström, Saab product manager for autonomous naval systems, told Janes. Propulsion relies on lithium-ion batteries powering an electric system, driving a range of approximately 600 nautical miles that can be extended through the platform’s modular design. The vehicle completed sea acceptance tests covering core functions, navigation, software integration, and autonomous underwater operations to validate Saab’s Autonomous Ocean Core software.
Operational Goals and Unanswered Questions
The joint project explores how autonomous underwater capabilities might address future operational requirements, primarily focusing on information gathering, surveillance, and underwater situational awareness. Karlström stated that the design supports future capability growth and experimentation. An additional program objective investigates how autonomous underwater systems can conduct longer-duration operations while maintaining effectiveness, though Saab withheld the exact endurance metrics.

When asked by Janes whether the demonstrator could support allied navies, Saab declined to disclose details. Further testing and evaluation schedules remain planned as the development partners continue assessing the technology.
