Samsung’s ‘Wide’ Galaxy Z Fold: A Recent Form Factor on the Horizon

Samsung is poised to expand its foldable phone lineup with a new device internally referred to as the “Wide Fold.” Evidence of this forthcoming device surfaced in early builds of Samsung’s One UI 9, suggesting a launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 in summer 2026. The potential arrival of a wider Galaxy Z Fold comes as Apple prepares to enter the foldable market with its own iPhone Fold.

Uncovering the ‘Wide Fold’ Through Software

The first indications of the Wide Fold emerged from Android Package Kits (APKs) of One UI 9, discovered by Telegram user wr3ckl3ss and reported by Android Authority. These APKs contained animations showcasing the opening and closing of a foldable phone with a distinctively wider aspect ratio. The device is identified by the codename “H8” and model number SM-F971U within Samsung’s software.

Design and Display Expectations

While official visuals remain scarce, reports suggest the Wide Fold will deviate from the taller, narrower form factor of existing Galaxy Z Fold models. According to a report from Etnews, the device is expected to have a squarer, boxier design with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Gadgets360 notes that this could translate to a 7.6-inch internal screen when unfolded and a 5.4-inch external display when folded.

Aspect Ratio and Potential Benefits

Current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold devices feature a display ratio close to 1.11:1 when open. Leaks indicate the Wide Fold may adopt a 16:10 aspect ratio, more akin to that of a laptop display. The Gadget Flow highlights that this wider format could improve multitasking and content consumption, offering a more expansive viewing experience.

Positioning in the Foldable Market

Samsung’s potential introduction of the Wide Fold aligns with a broader trend of innovation in the foldable smartphone market. The launch follows the release of the Galaxy Z Trifold earlier in 2026 and anticipates competition from Apple’s forthcoming iPhone Fold. The Wide Fold may also be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the high-end Galaxy Z Fold 8, potentially broadening the appeal of foldable technology to a wider consumer base.

What We Still Don’t Recognize

Despite the growing evidence, key details about the Wide Fold remain unknown. There are currently no leaked photos or concrete visual assets of the device. Specifications regarding the camera system, processor, and other hardware components are also yet to be revealed. Samsung has not yet issued an official comment regarding the Wide Fold.
