Nothing OS 5.0 Based on Android 17 Rolls Out to Phone 3a and 4a Series

Nothing Deploys Android 17-Based Nothing OS 5.0 to Four Mid-Range Models

Nothing has begun rolling out the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update based on Android 17 for four mid-range smartphones: the Nothing Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (4a), and Phone (4a) Pro. The rollout arrives ahead of the previously scheduled November 2026 window, bringing interface overhauls, upgraded camera tools, and privacy controls to the devices.

Distribution is occurring in phases, meaning arrival times vary. The software package for the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro requires 3,09 GB of storage space, prompting recommendations for a stable Wi-Fi connection prior to installation. During installation, phones can use more power and feel warmer than usual, though Nothing notes device performance will return to normal once the update is fully installed. Users are also advised to back up their data before beginning the installation process. Firmware version numbers differ across the lineup, with the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro designated as C5.0-261023-2146, the Phone (4a) receiving version C5.0-261023-2145, and the Phone (4a) Pro utilizing version C5.0-261021-1625.

Interface Overhaul and Glyph App Integration

Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a Translucent theme featuring a frosted glass effect and the Geist typeface. The update separates Quick Settings from the notification panel, lets users manage home screen app icons in bulk, and adds three desktop widgets alongside an Expanded Dark theme. The update also brings a new design for the Settings menu, while color accents take inspiration from the wallpaper.

Rear lighting controls have been moved out of general settings and into a dedicated Glyph application. Users gain access to a Glyph Timer widget, while the Phone (4a) series features a Glyph Bar containing 63 mini-LEDs. Additional additions include the Collector and Away Time widgets, a three-color status bar indicator for sensitive access, location, and AI processing, two lock screen clock display choices with color customization options, Enhanced HDR brightness settings, Noto 3D Emoji in Gboard, refined Live Updates in the status bar, and one-tap Bluetooth connection and disconnection support within Quick Settings.

Camera Enhancements and Model Differences

The update brings a Dual-view Video feature to all four devices, allowing users to record footage simultaneously using both the front and rear cameras. While the core operating system update is shared, individual models receive distinct photographic adjustments.

The Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro receive a tuning interface with seven adjustable image effects and updated presets, alongside a 2×2 widget and the ability to use filters and tuning while recording video. Meanwhile, the Phone (4a) series features faster Essential Voice transcription speeds. Across all devices in the update wave, Nothing has updated the camera application to streamline shooting layouts and smooth out animations, while also improving recording processes, zoom capabilities, close-up photography, and QR code scanning. The Phone (4a) includes a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom, outperforming the 2x optical zoom found on the 3a generation, and features a 6,78-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of up to 4.500 nits that surpasses its predecessor’s 3.000 nits.

Phased Software Rollout Schedule

The current deployment follows the initial release of Nothing OS 5.0 for the Nothing Phone (3) in early October 2026. Following the current wave of updates for the 3a and 4a lineups, Nothing has scheduled the stable software for the Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus in mid-November 2026.

Subsequent rollouts include the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite in late December 2026, followed by the Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro in mid-January 2027. Users running eligible devices can manually check for the firmware by navigating to Settings, selecting System, and opening System update.
