During a recent regional roundtable, Roh explained that hardware upgrades are now increasingly tied to their ability to support and enhance Galaxy AI features. “To craft Galaxy AI run smoothly, it must be backed by strong hardware,” Roh stated (translation approximate). He emphasized that Samsung is developing its hardware, software, and AI capabilities in tandem, with major upgrades arriving when the company achieves a “desired level of excellence.”
This doesn’t mean hardware innovation is becoming irrelevant. Instead, Samsung is framing these improvements as tools to enable smarter, more intuitive software experiences. The company is focusing on custom application processors with enhanced neural processing units (NPUs) to efficiently handle AI workloads. Dedicated hardware is being integrated to bolster privacy and security, including technologies embedded within the display itself.

Even components like smartphone cameras, historically a major area of competition, are being re-evaluated through the lens of AI. While sensors and lenses remain important, Roh noted that modern smartphone photography heavily relies on AI-powered image processing working in conjunction with the hardware. This approach may explain Samsung’s current reluctance to adopt multiple telephoto lens configurations seen in some competitor devices.
