Main Plaza in San Antonio Set for $15 Million Renovation to Enhance Accessibility and Historic Storytelling

SAN ANTONIO (February 19, 2026) – The City of San Antonio and the Main Plaza Conservancy will unveil conceptual designs for the Main Plaza Improvement Project on February 23, 2026, at the Central Library (600 Soledad). Residents are invited to attend an open house from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. To preview the designs and speak with the project team.

The project, a collaboration between the City’s Capital Delivery Department, the Center City Development and Operations Department, and the Conservancy, aims to improve accessibility and enhance the historical narrative of the iconic plaza. Construction is slated to initiate in summer 2027. Renderings of the $15 million project showcase planned improvements.

Addressing Accessibility Barriers

A primary focus of the renovation is to address existing accessibility challenges related to the Plaza’s surface grading, restroom facilities, and seating arrangements. City funding is specifically allocated to ensure safe access for individuals with mobility issues, including wheelchair users and families with strollers. The project aims to improve accessibility for all visitors.

Funding and Philanthropic Support

The project’s funding model combines City funds dedicated to accessibility improvements with private philanthropic contributions raised by the Main Plaza Conservancy. Generous donations have been received from the Ewing Halsell Foundation, Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation, John R. And Greli N. Less Charitable Trust, and other donors.

Enhancements to Public Space and Historic Storytelling

Beyond accessibility upgrades, the project will incorporate improvements to enhance the overall public experience. These include improved gathering areas, expanded green space, increased food and beverage options, and interpretive elements that highlight the Plaza’s rich history and cultural significance. The goal is to educate visitors about the Plaza’s origins and its enduring role in San Antonio’s cultural life.

Next Steps and Community Engagement
