As the cost of higher education continues to rise, students are increasingly reliant on financial aid and scholarships to make college accessible. At San Diego City College, a diverse student body faces a range of financial challenges, but resources are available to help navigate the process and offset expenses. FAFSA Application and Financial Aid Awareness
Dante Padilla, an accounting student at San Diego City College, exemplifies the importance of applying for financial aid. He sought confirmation that his Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) was accepted and to understand the timeline for receiving aid. “I think (applying) is very important, because most of the people who didn’t apply to college were because of the money, because they were afraid of how expensive it is,” Padilla said. He highlighted the potential for scholarships to cover the full cost of studies, allowing students to focus on academics. Federal Student Aid encourages prospective students to proactively consider college costs, net expenses, location, and available financial aid.
The Rising Cost of Attendance
While tuition and fees at public two-year colleges in California have decreased to around $1,440 for incoming freshmen in 2025-26 – the lowest in the nation, according to College Board – the total cost of attendance extends beyond tuition. San Diego City College’s tuition increased by 4.55% for in-state students, but remains relatively affordable at $46 per unit for California residents. Although, students must as well account for housing, food, transportation, and books, all of which are experiencing price increases. Food costs in San Diego have risen 3% over the past year, and energy prices have increased nearly 7%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The total cost to attend City College in 2025-26 ranges from $23,775 for students living at home to over $40,000 for those living away from home. Out-of-state students living away from home can expect to pay nearly $50,000 for two semesters.
Student Financial Struggles and Resource Availability
Marine biology student Samara Valle-Hameed experienced the challenges of waiting for federal aid, facing an unexpected $100 textbook expense. Fortunately, her professor directed her to a potential voucher from the financial aid office. These experiences underscore the financial difficulties faced by many City College students.
Scholarship Opportunities and the AwardSpring Portal
San Diego City College offers a variety of scholarships, grants, and assistance programs. Edwidge Dupard, scholarship coordinator at City College, notes that many students don’t apply for aid, either believing they won’t qualify or lacking necessary parental information. “I feel like a lot of students are still not applying for financial aid,” Dupard said. “First, because they believe that they are not going to receive it or that they do not qualify, and second, because they probably do not have their parents’ information.” Dupard encourages all students to apply, regardless of their initial assumptions.
The college received over 1,800 applications for the fall 2025 semester, successfully awarding 55 scholarships. A new matchmaking portal, AwardSpring, simplifies the scholarship application process. Available through the City College scholarships page, the portal uses self-identification questions – such as EOPS status, disability status, and military service – to connect students with relevant scholarships. As Dupard explained, “You answer the general questions and the system automatically matches you with scholarships that fit your criteria.”
Additional Financial Aid Programs
Beyond general scholarships, City College offers aid through programs like Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), scholarships for student-athletes, and the San Diego Promise, which covers two years of tuition and fees for eligible applicants.
Important Dates and Award Notification
Students have until March 9, 2026, to apply for over 75 scholarships through the AwardSpring portal. Scholarship awards for the spring semester will be announced in April, and recipients will be invited to an awards banquet on May 4, 2026.
