613 Ukrainian Drones Target Moscow Region
Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region in a nighttime aerial assault, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Between 20:30 Moscow time on October 28 and 07:00 on October 29, a total of 613 drones headed toward the Moscow region.
Sobyanin stated that Russian forces neutralized the majority of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles on the distant approaches to the region. He added that 231 of the drones were destroyed as they closed in on Moscow. Emergency services deployed to the location where the debris fell.
Flights Restricted Across Three Moscow Airports
The nighttime drone barrage forced Rosaviatsiya to implement flight restrictions at the airports Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky. Authorities diverted several incoming flights, including two aircraft traveling from Turkey to Moscow, which were returned due to the restrictions at Vnukovo. Zhukovsky lifted its restrictions after an hour, while the other two airports continued operating on a restricted basis by coordination.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claims that over 1,600 Ukrainian drones involved in the massive attack on Moscow were shot down down by Russian air defence, including 450 on approach to Moscow.
Kremlin Condemns Attacks During Africa Summit
The aerial assault coincided with the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, which drew leaders and government delegations from 48 nations. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned the strikes, calling Kiev’s decision to target the capital during a major international diplomatic forum “very strange.” Russian officials characterized the offensive as one of the largest coordinated drone operations launched by Ukraine against Russia to date.
Widespread Strikes Hit Russian Regions and Ukrainian Cities
While the focus centered on the capital, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that air defense systems intercepted a total of 1,214 drones across 19 different regions of the Russian Federation overnight. In the Urals, regional authorities in Sterlitamak, Bashkortostan, confirmed that eight drones were intercepted, with falling debris causing minor material damage at a local industrial facility.
