Sangju City Launches Dedicated Sports Association for Athletes with Disabilities

A new chapter in inclusive sports has begun in Sangju, South Korea, with the official launch of the Sangju City Sports Association for the Disabled. The November 27th launch ceremony marked a significant step towards fostering athletic opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the region.

A Historic Beginning

Over 300 attendees, including city council members, provincial representatives, organization heads and athletes, gathered at the Sangju City Indoor Gymnasium to celebrate the association’s inception. The event featured a vibrant drum performance and an incanto soloist ensemble, setting a celebratory tone for the occasion.

Ceremony Highlights

The launch ceremony included a formal declaration, a progress report outlining the association’s goals, and the presentation of commemorative plaques. Recognition was given to individuals who have championed disability sports in Sangju, including Kim Jang-hwan, president of the Sangju City Federation of Disabled Persons Associations, weightlifter Kim Hye-min, and disabled sports leader Kim Chil-seon, all of whom received plaques of merit from the Sangju mayor.

Experiential Opportunities

Attendees were similarly offered a firsthand experience with sports for the disabled through an on-site demonstration center featuring Shurun and Hangung, two adaptive sports. This interactive element proved popular, allowing participants to engage directly with the activities.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Sangju Mayor Kang Young-seok expressed gratitude to the organizations and individuals who contributed to the association’s formation, both financially and through dedicated effort. He affirmed the city’s commitment to integrating disability sports into the daily lives of its citizens. “We will continue to work hard to ensure that sports for the disabled can naturally turn into a part of the daily lives of citizens,” stated Mayor Kang Young-seok.

Sangju City and Sports Infrastructure

Sangju City, located in Gyeongsangbuk-do province, is home to the Sangju Indoor Gymnasium, a key venue for sporting events. The Armed Forces Athletic Corps is also located nearby, in Mungyeong City Sangju – NamuWiki.
