SBA Research Joins Green Software Foundation for Secure & Sustainable Software

SBA Research has joined the Green Software Foundation as part of an expanding initiative to integrate resource efficiency with core cybersecurity practices. The collaboration links the information security center with the Linux Foundation-backed nonprofit to establish shared standards for sustainable software engineering.

SBA Research and Green Software Foundation Partnership

Founded in 2006 as a spin-off from TU Vienna, SBA Research operates as Austria’s largest dedicated information security research center, employing approximately 130 people across technical research and professional services. The center’s research groups focus on resilient energy systems and sustainable digital solutions, combining academic study with industry implementation.

“We view security and sustainability as mutually reinforcing factors: both benefit from efficient, maintainable systems and well-considered technical decisions,” said Michael Koppmann, Senior Information Security Consultant at SBA Research. “In their interplay, these principles can help develop software that is more resource-efficient, reliable, and user-friendly.”

The Green Software Foundation operates as a nonprofit under the Linux Foundation umbrella, uniting commercial enterprises, nonprofits, and academic institutions worldwide. The organization builds standards, tools, and best practices targeting carbon, energy, water, and waste reduction in software development.

SBA Research Joins Green Software Foundation for Secure & Sustainable Software

“SBA Research brings profound expertise in the field of information security to the Green Software Foundation—and at a time when secure and sustainable software are becoming inseparable priorities,” said Navveen Balani, Geschäftsführer of the Green Software Foundation. “Their ability to connect foundational research with practical implementation will help our community integrate security into the sustainability tools and guidelines we develop for concrete software projects.”

Integrating Sustainability into Security Research

The partnership aligns with SBA Research’s broader expansion of sustainability initiatives across its research and consulting divisions. Professional services at the center now connect secure software development directly with green software engineering principles.

By engaging with the broader open-source community, industry partners, and academic peers, the collaboration aims to produce practical frameworks that address both environmental impact and threat mitigation.
