Scott McLeod Appointed Wallabies Defence Coach Under Les Kiss
Rugby Australia has confirmed the appointment of Scott McLeod as the Wallabies’ latest Defence Coach, marking the first key staffing decision under incoming Head Coach Les Kiss. McLeod, 53, will join the team ahead of the August 8 Test against Japan.
Extensive Coaching Experience
McLeod brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as an assistant coach with the All Blacks for over six years, including participation in the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. Rugby Australia announced the appointment on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Prior to his role with the All Blacks, McLeod held coaching positions with Waikato, the Chiefs, and the Highlanders, even serving as interim head coach for the Highlanders in 2017, leading them to an upset victory over the British & Irish Lions. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that McLeod replaces Laurie Fisher, who will transition to a consultancy role.
Recent Role and Playing Career
Most recently, McLeod served as an Assistant Coach with the Kubota Spears in Japan’s NTT Rugby League One competition. His playing career included 44 games for the Chiefs and 10 Tests for the All Blacks as a centre. Rugbypass highlights his extensive background in the sport.
Statements from Key Figures
“I am very excited to return to international rugby, especially to join up with Les and the team to build on the foundations that have been place in place,” McLeod said. “There is a lot of excitement building within Rugby Australia and I am really committed to doing my part. I am looking forward to connecting with RA, the players and everyone who is invested in this team.”
Rugby Australia Director of High Performance Peter Horne stated, “On behalf of the Wallabies group, we are delighted to bring a coach of Scott’s experience and character into our national environment ahead of an important period for the squad…Scott has a great understanding of the environment and standards Joe Schmidt has driven since joining the Wallabies, having coached alongside him with the All Blacks, and will provide great support to Les as he transitions into the Head Coach position.”
