Blood Donation Awareness Campaign Launches with Branded Fire Department Ambulances in Allier
Ten emergency ambulances in the Allier department now feature prominent “don du sang” blood donation branding, according to a report by mesinfos.fr. The public health initiative, formalized through a partnership signed Thursday, October 8, at Yzeure, marks a first for the Auvergne region after drawing inspiration from a similar project in Bordeaux.
The campaign places the slogan Nous sauvons des vies, le don de sang aussi !
on the rear doors of ten fire service vehicles operated by the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 03). Colonel Philippe Sansa of SDIS 03 stated that officials selected the department’s most frequently utilized ambulances to maximize visibility during daily emergency operations.
Deployment Locations Across the Department
The branded fleet is distributed strategically across key urban and rural sectors of the Allier department. Two vehicles operate out of Moulins, two in Vichy, and two in Montluçon. Four additional ambulances serve Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule, Gannat, Montmarault, and Dompierre-sur-Besbre.
The French Blood Establishment (EFS) initiated the partnership due to the extensive reach of the local fire service. With roughly 60 ambulances handling approximately 22,000 emergency rescue calls annually, the vehicles circulate closely among residents outside traditional collection sites.
Fear and Misconceptions Hinder French Blood Donation
While 96 percent of the French population recognizes the importance of blood donation, fewer than 4 percent actually donate each year, according to Élodie Moret, head of collections in Allier. Common barriers include needle anxiety, fear of fainting, and perceived lack of time. Moret noted that many potential donors also mistakenly exclude themselves without verifying their eligibility.
Regional communication director for the EFS Sophie Titoulet emphasized the direct impact of the procedure, noting that a single donation can save up to three lives. The Allier department collects between 14,000 and 15,000 blood bags annually. Because Auvergne generates a surplus, the region also supplies blood products to other territories, including Île-end-France, while demand for plasma donations continues to rise at the Moulins Donation Center.
