Semarang Bakso Waste Dispute Ends in Peace After Police Mediation

A neighborhood dispute in Semarang over a food vendor dumping greasy broth directly into residential street drains has ended in a formal police-mediated settlement. The conflict in Srondol Wetan Village, Banyumanik District, which attracted attention after a video of the dispute circulated on social media, ended after police mediated an agreement between the meatball stall owner and residents.

The conflict erupted when a food stall employee was recorded pouring waste broth into the gutter outside a local resident’s home, sparking a heated exchange that the resident said went ignored despite repeated prior warnings. According to kumparan, the neighborhood confrontation prompted intervention from the local police precinct, the subdistrict government, and community heads.

Grease Trap Mandates Issued by Environmental Officials

Following the online outcry, the Semarang Environmental Agency (DLH) stepped in to inspect the site and address broader regulatory compliance for small food businesses in the area. Wahyu Heryawan, head of environmental supervision and empowerment at DLH Kota Semarang, explained that culinary operators must install preliminary treatment systems, such as grease traps, to prevent food solids and viscous liquids from choking public drainage systems.

“Ideally, every culinary business has an initial waste processing facility or pretreatment, such as making a grease trap,” Heryawan stated, noting that street vendors operating out of tents face logistical hurdles compared to permanent establishments.

Resident Impact and the Path to Agreement

Local resident Rina, 27, whose home sits directly in front of the affected drainage channel, described the daily toll of the improper waste disposal. She told kumparan that the persistent odor of fatty waste severely impacted her household and neighbors, making the surrounding air unbearable regardless of the weather.

Under the terms of the police-brokered agreement, the stall owner promised to halt dumping waste into neighborhood street channels entirely. Instead, the business committed to constructing proper wastewater sanitation infrastructure on private property rather than in front of resident homes, alongside utilizing odor-neutralizing additives and installing a wastewater filter.
