New Forensic Crime Lab Coming to Southeast Missouri State University Campus

Cape Girardeau, MO – A new state-of-the-art forensic crime laboratory is set to be constructed on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), thanks to a partnership between the university and the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The lab aims to address evidence backlogs, expand forensic services and enhance training opportunities for law enforcement across southeastern Missouri.

Land Donation and Facility Goals

SEMO has donated land for the new Troop E crime laboratory, located near 1221 Broadway Street, adjacent to the SEMO Athletics offices. The donation ensures the lab remains in Cape Girardeau, a key priority for local representatives. “There was no guarantee the crime lab would stay in Cape Girardeau,” stated SEMO President Dr. Brad Hodson KFVS12. “Representative Voss, Senator Burger, the board of governors, all began working to ensure that this location, these employees, this service, stayed in Cape Girardeau, and ideally close to campus.”

Enhanced Forensic Capabilities

The new facility will significantly increase capacity and incorporate modern equipment, allowing for faster and more accurate analysis in several key areas, including DNA testing, ballistics, toxicology, controlled-substances testing, and trace-evidence work. Missouri State Representative John Voss emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating, “Rapid, dependable forensic support is essential to investigate thoroughly, arrest decisively, and prosecute effectively.” KRCU Public Radio. Benefits for Law Enforcement and Students

MSHP officials anticipate the new lab will be a valuable recruitment tool, particularly due to its proximity to the SEMO campus.
