Two vehicles carrying six people collided in a busy intersection in central Sarpsborg on Thursday afternoon, leaving a child trapped in the wreckage and triggering a large-scale emergency response that closed local roads for hours. The October 29, 2026, crash prompted the deployment of an air ambulance, police resources, and the accident investigation unit from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
The collision occurred in a traffic light intersection in Sarpsborg. A medical doctor happened to be driving through the area immediately after the impact and radioed emergency services to report that one person was seriously injured and a child was trapped inside one of the crushed automobiles. Øst Police District operational manager Ronny Mangseth confirmed that two cars total were involved in the high-impact collision.
Emergency Services Free Trapped Minor Transport Children
All emergency services rushed to the scene as first responders worked frantically to cut away the deformed metal and free the trapped minor. Operative manager Håkon Nilsen told VG that two children were among the six occupants split between the two vehicles and required immediate medical evacuation. One child was transported by ground ambulance, while the second child was flown directly to Ullevål University Hospital by an air ambulance helicopter due to the severity of the impact. On-site incident commander Mathias Hillestad explained to NRK that both patients were hospitalized primarily because of the significant energy released during the crash. The four other occupants—a man in his 40s, a man in his 30s, and two teenage boys—escaped the collision physically uninjured, according to VG’s reporting.

Investigators Cite Driver Failing to Yield Seize License
Investigators from the Statens vegvesen accident group arrived at the cordoned-off intersection to map tire tracks, examine vehicle damage angles, and record digital evidence of the collision course. Øst Police District confirmed that one of the drivers, a man in his 40s, was officially cited for failing to yield the right-of-way in a traffic light intersection. Police seized the man’s driver’s license at the scene and planned to impound his vehicle for technical inspections. While operational manager Ronny Mangseth stated there was no initial suspicion of driving under the influence, routine blood samples were ordered from the cited driver as part of standard protocol for serious traffic incidents. Officers spent the evening interviewing multiple eyewitnesses to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the impact.
Traffic Disruption and Road Closures
The wreckage blocked the main thoroughfare through Sarpsborg center, forcing law enforcement to shut down the surrounding roads for multiple hours. The prolonged closure generated big traffic problems throughout the municipality during the evening rush hour.
