An Empty Nest That Fills Up Too Fast
“Youth” centers on Alex, a fifty-something publishing associate and single mother played by Sharon Horgan. Alex faces a sudden midlife crisis when her son, Ruari—played by Aran Murphy, son of Cillian Murphy—is scheduled to leave for university.
The departure is meant to give Alex time to advance her career, re-enter the dating pool, and focus on her own identity. Instead, Ruari returns home without explanation on the exact same day Alex experiences a disastrous first date with an older man and severe lockjaw during a high-stakes work meeting.
Professional Clashes and Complicated Romances
The series’ early episodes watch Alex confront the realization that time is running out. At work, she clashes with expectations by championing an undiscovered, commercially risky author instead of chasing a buzzy, controversial writer.
In her personal life, she weighs a secure relationship with an older man against a complicated dynamic with Patrick, a younger and habitually single former flame played by Rupert Friend.
A Domestic Balancing Act Without Stability
Alex’s home life offers no stability. Her ex-husband, Logan, is described as a narcissistic man-child, leaving Alex to manage her son’s sudden return alone while balancing the needs of her aging parents.
