Sheffield Wednesday Takeover Saga Continues as League One Looms
Sheffield Wednesday’s future remains uncertain as potential new owners hesitate to meet financial demands set by outgoing owner Dejphon Chansiri, potentially triggering a 15-point deduction upon relegation to League One. Despite interest from multiple parties, including former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and American financier David Storch, a deal has yet to materialize.
Points Deduction Threat
The primary obstacle to a swift takeover is the requirement to settle outstanding debts with Chansiri. Under English Football League (EFL) rules, new owners must pay football creditors in full and 25% of debts to other creditors, including the current owner Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators, Begbies Traynor, are tasked with securing the best deal for creditors.
To avoid an immediate 15-point deduction next season, any new owner would need to pay Chansiri £15 million of the £60 million he is owed. The Times reports that none of the current bidders are willing to meet this condition.
Bidders and Offers
James Bord, who previously held preferred bidder status, withdrew his interest after agreeing to pay Chansiri, thereby avoiding the points penalty. Current offers are significantly lower than Bord’s agreed-upon £48 million. Football League World indicates Mike Ashley’s initial bid was around £20 million, with no significant increase reported.
Alongside Ashley and Storch, a “mystery bidder” remains in contention The Star. Administrators are hoping to name a new preferred bidder this week, but no timeframe is guaranteed.
Financial Challenges Beyond the Takeover
Beyond the Chansiri payment, the new owners will face additional financial hurdles. These include approximately £8 million needed for stadium improvements, £6 million owed to HMRC (the UK’s tax authority), and up to £3 million in legal fees.
Relegation Confirmed
Sheffield Wednesday have already been relegated to League One, finishing bottom of the Championship table with -7 points. Football League World reports that the primary focus now is to establish a sound financial footing for the club ahead of the next season.
Looking Ahead
The situation remains fluid, and the EFL is prepared to act quickly once a provisional offer is accepted. The coming days will be crucial in determining Sheffield Wednesday’s future and whether they will face a points deduction in League One.
