Shohei Ohtani Set to Pitch in Spring Training, Dodgers Outline Plans for Two-Way Star

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to make his first pitching appearance of spring training on Wednesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Francisco Giants. The highly anticipated outing marks a key step in Ohtani’s recovery from a recent elbow injury and his preparation for the 2026 season.

Ohtani’s Return to the Mound

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Ohtani will also be the designated hitter in Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres, as the team carefully manages the two-way Japanese star’s workload. Roberts emphasized the importance of building Ohtani up gradually before the regular season begins on March 26.

World Baseball Classic and Buildup

Ohtani recently rejoined the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch following Japan’s elimination in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. While he did not pitch for Japan during the tournament, he did participate in bullpen sessions to maintain his arm strength.

Pitching Plans and Regular Season Outlook

“I believe three to four (innings) is fair for tomorrow,” Roberts said, outlining the plan for Wednesday’s game. “It’s more of just doing what we can with what we have left to get him ready for the season. He did his part when he was with Team Japan and now you’re putting him in against real competition, build him up there, and strive to get as much buildup before the season starts.”

The Dodgers plan for Ohtani to make one more pre-season start, scheduled against the Los Angeles Angels on either March 23 or 24. This schedule suggests that Ohtani will likely not make his first regular-season start until the team’s second series against the Cleveland Guardians.

Past Performance

Last season, Ohtani posted a 2.87 ERA over 14 regular-season starts after recovering from an elbow injury. He also recorded a 2-1 record with a 4.43 ERA in the postseason, contributing to the Dodgers’ championship run.
