Siemens and Palo Alto Networks Deliver AI-Powered Cybersecurity for Industrial 5G
Published: March 9, 2026
Siemens has announced a verified cybersecurity solution for industrial private 5G networks, developed in collaboration with Palo Alto Networks. This solution aims to meet the stringent security requirements of modern manufacturing while maintaining the performance necessary for increasingly AI-driven production environments.
The Growing Need for Industrial 5G Security
Data-driven production systems rely heavily on wireless connectivity for sensors and mobile assets, making private 5G networks essential infrastructure. However, this increased connectivity too introduces new vulnerabilities. Cyberattacks can lead to costly downtime and potentially compromise worker safety. Regulations like NIS2 mandate robust, defense-in-depth security architectures compliant with standards such as IEC 62443.
A Purpose-Built Cybersecurity Solution
Traditional IT security solutions often fall short in operational technology (OT) environments, creating performance bottlenecks or failing to address OT-specific threats. The Siemens and Palo Alto Networks collaboration addresses this gap by combining Siemens’ Private 5G infrastructure with Palo Alto Networks’ Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW), optimized for AI.
Key Components of the Solution
The integrated solution comprises three core elements:
- Siemens Private 5G Infrastructure: Provides local, deterministic wireless connectivity with built-in security features, ensuring data sovereignty and low-latency communication independent of mobile network operators.
- SINEC Security Monitor: Siemens’ software enables passive, non-intrusive, continuous on-premises security monitoring during production, identifying anomalies and potential threats without disrupting operations.
- Palo Alto Networks NGFW: Delivers Layer 7 security and dedicated OT protocol analysis, specifically optimized for industrial environments. It provides deep packet inspection for OT protocols while maintaining low latency, now extending to wireless communications over private 5G networks.
Verification and Testing
Palo Alto Networks has specifically optimized its NGFW technology for Siemens’ Private 5G infrastructure. Siemens extensively tested and verified the solution at its Digital Connectivity Lab in Erlangen, across multiple deployment scenarios. This verification process confirms that the solution delivers industrial-grade security without compromising the low latency and high throughput required for real-time production systems – a key distinction from generic IT security approaches.
Industry-Specific Security
“Pharmaceutical production has different security requirements than an automobile assembly line,” says Michael Metzler, Vice President Horizontal Management Cybersecurity for Digital Industries at Siemens. “Siemens’ verified solution with Palo Alto Networks addresses these industry-specific requirements through a purpose-built architecture, providing manufacturers with secure 5G connectivity tailored to their operations.”
The Future of Industrial Security
“Palo Alto Networks and Siemens are not just connecting the factory floor – we are building the central nervous system for the future of industry. A future that is intelligent, autonomous and fundamentally secure,” says Dharminder Debisarun, Smart Industries Cybersecurity Executive at Palo Alto Networks.
The verified solution is now available as part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.
