Skyports and SkyDrive Advance Urban Air Mobility with Tokyo eVTOL Demonstrations

Tokyo recently hosted a series of demonstration flights showcasing the potential of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility (AAM). The five-day event, held from February 24-28, 2026, featured remotely piloted flights of SkyDrive’s SD-05 eVTOL aircraft and highlighted the integration of Skyports’ Vertiport Automation System (VAS).

Demonstrating eVTOL Integration in Tokyo

The demonstrations were part of a program initiated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to explore how eVTOLs, often referred to as “flying cars,” can be integrated into Japan’s transportation network. SkyDrive collaborated with Mitsubishi Estate Co., Kanematsu Corporation, and Skyports Infrastructure on the project.

Skyports’ Vertiport Automation System in Action

Skyports’ VAS served as the central technical component for both ground and flight operations. The system integrated with SkyDrive’s SD-05 aircraft to provide real-time monitoring of airspace, weather data, and situational awareness. VAS also managed landing and takeoff slots and oversaw ground equipment digitally. Flight data was integrated into the airspace monitoring system to support automated control and remote piloting of the aircraft.

Passenger Experience and Terminal Technology

A temporary passenger terminal, also integrated with VAS, was established to simulate the passenger experience. Features included facial recognition check-in, security screening, flight information displays, and boarding guidance, all designed to minimize passenger dwell time. The Skyports operations room provided a comprehensive overview of all aspects of the demonstration, including ground and flight operations, airspace monitoring, and passenger status.

Industry Perspectives

Yun Yuan Tay, Head of APAC at Skyports Infrastructure, stated that the demonstration “cements Japan’s ambitions when it comes to integrating AAM within the fabric of its urban environments.” Tay emphasized the importance of safety, efficiency, and passenger experience for the successful implementation of AAM, and highlighted Skyports’ role in providing the necessary link between ground and air operations.

Public Participation and Future Development

SkyDrive also invited members of the public to participate in testing the passenger flow through the terminal facility, including check-in, security, and boarding procedures. This initiative aimed to gather feedback and refine the passenger experience for future eVTOL services. The demonstrations align with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s roadmap for introducing eVTOL infrastructure.
