U.S. Energy Mix 2026: Natural Gas Leads Primary Production

Natural gas and natural gas plant liquids now account for 47.6% of U.S. primary energy production, according to 2026 year-to-date data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This output highlights the dominance of gas over crude oil, which contributes 26.1% of production, and coal, which supplies 9.8%. In total, natural gas contributes 21.41 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) against a total production of 44.98 quadrillion Btu. Within this category, dry natural gas accounts for 80.6% of energy content, while natural gas plant liquids provide 19.4%.

Proximity to Supply Influences Manufacturer Site Selection

The Shale Crescent—comprising Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania—forms the country’s largest natural gas-producing region. For manufacturers, this proximity to supply influences site selection and long-term operating costs. Companies must weigh pipeline access, utility connections, and specific contract terms when evaluating the region for energy-intensive operations.

Market Shifts Toward Demand-Pull Dynamics

The U.S. natural gas market is moving from a traditional producer-push model to one driven by demand-pull dynamics. Oilprice reports that domestic producers are increasing output to meet rising consumption from data centers, expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity, and global spot market requirements. This surge is also fueled by the absence of Qatari gas due to the Iran war.

Producers are actively consolidating to capture this growth. EQT Corporation and Range Resources recently announced a merger agreement to create a company with a pro-forma enterprise value exceeding $50 billion. Lydia Walker, a senior research analyst at Wood Mackenzie, stated that the deal positions the combined entity as a key supplier for Appalachian power generation and data center needs. Meanwhile, Range Resources reported that its third-quarter natural gas production rose 11% from a year earlier, with year-to-date output up 5% compared to the same period in 2025.

Haynesville Output May Need to Rise Significantly

Expand COO Josh Viets noted that Haynesville output may need to rise by approximately 5 billion cubic feet per day over the next four to six years to keep pace with industrial and electrification requirements.

The EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook projects that rising production will offset higher LNG exports, leading to an average Henry Hub spot price of $3.16 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2027. This represents a 9% decrease compared to 2026 price levels. Looking further ahead, Expand Energy’s internal narrative projects significant revenue and earnings growth by 2029, though some pessimistic analysts model those figures at lower levels, reflecting concern that Expand Energy’s premium pricing plans may deliver less uplift than hoped.

Operational Challenges for 2027

As producers scale operations, they face potential constraints in the service sector. Expand Energy reported that it expects pressure on oilfield-service capacity in 2027, with overall cost inflation anticipated to remain in the low-to-mid-single-digit range. The company expects Haynesville well productivity to improve by 2% to 3% annually, though it warned that increased winter output from private operators could create a near-term supply overhang.

Prices Above Four Dollars Make Western Acreage Competitive

  • What factors influence the competitiveness of Haynesville natural gas?
Expand Energy indicates that prices exceeding $4 per MMBtu would make its western Haynesville acreage more competitive. The company realized an average of $2.68 per MMBtu for its Haynesville output during the third quarter of 2026.
  • How do analysts view the impact of the EQT and Range Resources merger?
Analysts suggest the deal provides the scale and liquids diversification required to serve long-term demand for power generation and data centers. EQT has already raised its 2026 production guidance by about 90 Bcfe due to improved well performance and compression investments.
  • What is the primary driver of the current U.S. natural gas strategy? The industry is pivoting to meet structural domestic demand growth, specifically from data centers and industrial projects.
