Slafkovský Records Assist in Canadiens Loss, Islanders Extend Win Streak

Juraj Slafkovský registered an assist in the Montreal Canadiens’ 3-4 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Friday, February 26, 2026. The 21-year-old winger played 18 minutes and 42 seconds, adding two penalty minutes, three blocked shots, and a pair of minus ratings to his stat line.

Slafkovský assisted on Cole Caufield’s goal at 50:00, giving Montreal a 3-2 lead. Although, Anders Lee tied the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, and Jean Pageau secured the win for the Islanders in overtime. The Islanders have now won three consecutive games.

Schaefer Breaks NHL Records

New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer continued his impressive rookie season, scoring two goals in the game. He has now scored 18 goals, surpassing Phil Housley’s previous record for most goals by an 18-year-old defenseman. Schaefer also broke the Islanders’ club record for goals by a rookie defenseman, previously held by Denis Potvin. He is closing in on Brian Leetch’s NHL record of 23 goals by a rookie defenseman, set in 1988-89.
