Scream 7’s Scrapped Plans and the Fate of Melissa Barrera’s Character

The upcoming seventh installment of the Scream franchise has been shrouded in controversy and creative shifts. Originally, plans were in motion for a dramatic three-movie arc involving Melissa Barrera’s character, Sam Carpenter, ultimately revealing her as the Ghostface killer. However, Barrera’s firing from the project due to her pro-Palestine comments led to the abandonment of these plans, impacting not only her role but as well the involvement of franchise veteran Skeet Ulrich.

The Original Three-Picture Arc

Skeet Ulrich, who reprised his role as Billy Loomis in Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), revealed the initial vision for his character’s return. According to Ulrich, the storyline was designed to span three films, gradually corrupting Sam Carpenter into becoming the latest incarnation of Ghostface. This arc aimed to explore the dark influence of Billy Loomis on his daughter, even from beyond the grave.

Barrera’s Firing and the Shift in Plans

The planned storyline was derailed when Melissa Barrera was removed from Scream 7 following public backlash over her social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Ulrich confirmed that Barrera’s departure effectively ended the possibility of the three-picture arc continuing. “Obviously, those things didn’t pan out, given certain things that happened,” Ulrich stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Ulrich’s Departure and the Impact on Scream 7

Ulrich’s involvement in Scream 7 was also contingent on Barrera’s continued role. With the shift in the narrative, his character’s return was no longer feasible. He explained to The Post, “I used to know…as part of coming back for five and six was being a part of seven. It was a three-picture arc for Billy Loomis, or the imagination of Billy Loomis in Melissa Barrera’s character’s head. But when all that went down with her, obviously you lose her and you lose what’s in her head.”

The Current State of Scream 7

Following the departures of Barrera and Jenna Ortega, the film underwent significant rewrites. Kevin Williamson, the creator of the Scream franchise, has taken the helm, and Neve Campbell is set to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. Matthew Lillard is also confirmed to return as Stu Macher. Ulrich expressed excitement about Williamson’s involvement, stating, “I’m excited for [‘Scream’ creator] Kevin Williamson to take the helm and to see what the mastermind of it all comes up with. I have no clue.”

What This Means for the Future of the Franchise

The changes surrounding Scream 7 highlight the challenges of navigating creative visions amidst real-world controversies. While the original plans for Sam Carpenter’s arc have been scrapped, the franchise continues to evolve with the return of key players like Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard. The seventh film promises a new direction for the series, leaving fans eager to see how Williamson will reimagine the Ghostface saga.
