The Slovakia national football team arrived on the Faroe Islands on Wednesday evening ahead of their third UEFA Nations League C match in Group 3. Head coach Vladimír Weiss leads his 26-player squad into the fixture at the Tórsvöllur stadium in Tórshavn, scheduled for Friday at 20:45 CEST, aiming to build on early victories against Moldova and Kazakhstan.
Arrival and Weather Challenges in Tórshavn
The Slovak delegation landed at Vágar Airport following a three-hour flight from Košice, touching down at 18:45 local time. While the flight was mostly calm, turbulence occurred during the final approach before the aircraft landed without incident. The team then traveled to the capital city of Tórshavn, where temperatures hovered between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius alongside strong, gusty winds that significantly lowered the wind chill.
Unpredictable weather patterns frequently impact travel to the Faroe Islands. Czech national team players had to extend their stay by an extra day last year following a loss in World Cup qualifying due to similar disruptions. The Slovak squad scheduled their pre-match training session for Thursday evening at the Tórsvöllur venue.
Squad Rotation and Pitch Conditions
Coach Weiss manages a roster of 26 players on the trip, including four goalkeepers, though Hugo Pavek, Mario Sauer, and Nino Marcelli remain with the Slovakia under-21 team for the current international window. Speaking to the Slovak Football Association’s official website, Weiss pointed to difficult physical conditions awaiting his players on the island.
“I spoke with the Kazakh guys who played there before us. The terrain will be difficult, a hard pitch, strong wind, rain, not good conditions for football. That is what awaits us on the Faroe Islands. I know the local conditions, I played at that stadium with Slovan,” Weiss said. Because of the artificial turf and a congested fixture schedule, the manager confirmed plans to rotate his lineup. “We have to hit the right selection. Matches on the Faroe Islands are tough. It will be a physical duel. Both teams play on the same pitch, but the hosts know how to play on it. We want to take points from the opponent, to win, and we will see what they allow us.”

Historical Context and Group Standings
Friday’s fixture marks Slovakia’s first appearance on the Faroe Islands in nearly 30 years. Their last visit took place on August 31, 1996, resulting in a 2-1 victory during qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Toftire. Jozef Jankech managed the side that day, with Ľubomír Moravčík scoring the opening goal before Peter Dubovský secured the win in the 90th minute from a free kick. Slovakia now sits in Group 3 of Nations League C alongside the Faroe Islands, aiming to secure another three points to bolster their campaign for promotion back to League B.
