Slovan Bratislava’s Title Defense Faces Challenges Despite Dominant Win

Slovan Bratislava entered the spring phase of the Slovak Nike League with a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Dunajská Streda, seemingly overcoming a turbulent autumn. Still, subsequent setbacks – a loss to Trenčín, elimination from the cup in Trnava and a draw against Ružomberok – have revealed underlying inconsistencies in the defending champions’ performance. Despite remaining at the top of the table, Slovan’s ability to maintain consistent form is under scrutiny.

Inconsistent Form and a Declining Win Rate

Team captain Vladimír Weiss Jr. Acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating, “After an excellent performance, there always comes one that is not worthy of a Slav,” following the defeat in Trenčín. Slovan’s difficulty in stringing together consecutive quality performances this year is a growing concern.

Coach Vladimír Weiss’s win rate has decreased to 62% this season, a 7% drop from the previous year and 10% lower than two seasons ago. This represents his lowest winning percentage since the 2017/2018 season, when the managerial duo of Ivan Vukomanovič and Martin Ševela achieved a 53% win rate.

Internal Support for Coach Weiss

Despite the declining statistics, coach Weiss enjoys strong support from the club’s ownership. Renowned journalist Michal Zeman noted in a Futbalnet podcast that Weiss’s position is secure due to the backing of owner Ivan Kmotrík Sr., stating, “Trainer Vlado Weiss has a special position thanks to the owner, which he would not have anywhere else. He is irrevocable!” Kmotrík Sr. Has reportedly granted Weiss significant autonomy and support within the club.

Struggles Against Lower-Ranked Opponents

Slovan’s struggles are particularly evident in matches against teams expected to compete in the relegation phase. Eight of Slovan’s losses this season have come against teams currently in the bottom half of the league table. While they demonstrate strength against title contenders, they often falter against weaker opposition, as seen in both matches against Ružomberok and Prešov. Coach Weiss highlighted this issue after the loss to Ružomberok, stating, “Because of the names, we should have won 3-0, but it doesn’t work that way. When you don’t run, you make mistakes, you underestimate a situation, it will take revenge on you.”

Goalscoring Concerns and Dependence on Set Pieces

Slovan’s offensive output has also been a point of concern. The team averages only 4.4 shots per match, ranking eighth in the league. The previous two seasons benefited from the prolific scoring of Tigran Barseghjan, who has seen his goal contribution decrease to 0.53 goals + assists per game this season, down from 0.77 in both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

The attacking duo of Andraž Šporar and Mykola Kucharevič have been hampered by injuries, though Kucharevič maintains a goal every 90 minutes on average. Slovan currently leads the league with 12 goals from set pieces, but lacks consistent goals from open play and pressing situations, averaging only three ball recoveries in the final third per duel (10th in the league).

Defensive Vulnerabilities

Defensively, Slovan has also shown vulnerabilities, conceding 30 goals – the most among the top five teams in the league. This is the highest number of goals conceded since the 2006/2007 season, when they conceded 32 goals in the main phase and finished eighth. They have kept only four clean sheets this year, fewer than all but Košice and Skalica.

Looking Ahead: The Derby with Trnava

Despite these challenges, Slovan’s performances against top-six teams offer hope for an eighth consecutive league title. They will close the basic phase with a crucial match against Trnava on February 28th. Trnava recently eliminated Slovan from the Slovnaft Cup, but has yet to secure a league victory this spring. This derby promises to be a significant test for both teams.
