Snapchat Launches Creator Subscriptions to Boost Recurring Revenue

Snapchat is introducing Creator Subscriptions, a new feature enabling creators to offer exclusive content to their most dedicated fans in exchange for a monthly fee. This move positions Snapchat alongside platforms like Facebook and Instagram, which already offer similar subscription services.

How Creator Subscriptions Perform

The Creator Subscriptions feature, currently in an alpha/testing phase, will initially be available to a select group of creators in the United States starting February 23. Snapchat plans to expand access to creators in Canada, the U.K., and France in the coming weeks.

According to Snapchat, Creator Subscriptions are designed to “give creators the freedom to experiment, reward their biggest supporters, and build a recurring income stream on Snapchat that grows with their audience.” The feature provides creators with a more direct monetization method beyond the existing Unified Monetization Program.

Benefits for Subscribers

Fans who subscribe to their favorite creator’s exclusive content will receive the following benefits:

  • Exclusive content, including subscriber-only Snaps, Stories, photos, and videos.
  • Priority replies, where subscribers’ messages to public Stories are highlighted.
  • An ad-free experience within that creator’s Stories.

Pricing and Revenue Sharing

Creators have the flexibility to set their own subscription prices, with Snapchat recommending tiers ranging from $4.99 to $19.99 per month. Still, Snapchat will retain approximately 40% of the subscription revenue as platform fees.

Initial Launch and Availability

The initial test phase involves around 15 creators, including Jeremiah Brown, Harry Jowsey, and Skai Jackson. Creator Subscriptions will initially be available to iOS users in the US, with the timing for Android availability yet to be specified.

Impact on the Snapchat Ecosystem

The introduction of Creator Subscriptions is expected to reshape the economic landscape of the platform. It remains to be seen how creators will adapt their content strategies now that they can directly charge for access, particularly considering Snapchat’s revenue share.

As reported by Neowin, this feature allows creators to build a more sustainable income stream on the platform.
