Northeast Storm Forces Movie Theater Closures, Disrupts Travel

A major winter storm, described as a bomb cyclone, is causing widespread disruption across the Northeast U.S., leading to the closure of dozens of movie theaters and the cancellation of thousands of flights. The storm brought blizzard conditions and the potential for up to 23 inches of snow in New York City.

AMC Theatres Among Those Affected

As of February 24, 2026, AMC Theatres has closed 60 locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Boston areas due to the severe weather, according to Deadline and Yahoo News. Approximately 600,000 households are without power as a result of the storm.

Manhattan Cinemas Reopening

Despite the widespread closures, some cinemas in Manhattan are expected to reopen later on February 24th, including Netflix’s Paris Theater, AMC Lincoln Square, Regal Union Square, and Regal Times Square. Moviegoing in Manhattan may be sustained by foot traffic utilizing the subway or sidewalks, provided power remains stable.

Box Office Impact

The storm comes during a relatively quiet period for the box office following the Presidents Day weekend. Comscore reported that all titles over the past weekend made $75.2 million, a 4% decrease compared to the same post-holiday frame last year. Yahoo News reports that Goat is currently number one at the domestic box office, with a second weekend gross of $16.8 million and a cumulative total of $58.1 million domestically, and $102.1 million worldwide. Wuthering Heights earned $14 million during its second weekend, bringing its total to $59.8 million.

Broadway and Late-Night TV As well Affected

The storm’s impact extends beyond the film industry. Broadway has canceled performances for a second consecutive evening, and late-night television shows, including those hosted by Colbert, Fallon, Meyers, and Stewart, have continued to air despite the challenging conditions.
