Sofia Mayor Calls for International Investigation into Deaths Near Petrohan Peak

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev has called for an international investigation into the deaths of six men near Petrohan peak in Bulgaria, stating the need for an objective assessment of the events and public reassurance. Terziev addressed the issue during an appearance on bTV’s “120 Minutes” program on February 15, 2026, as reported by bTV Novinite and bTV.

Acquaintance with the Deceased

Terziev revealed he knew all six men involved, stating his acquaintance began in the fall of 2022. He described a chance encounter where a friend invited him to join a group at a mountain hut near Petrohan. The group consisted of Ivaylo Kalushev, Ivaylo Ivanov, Plamen Statev, and Decho Vasilev, with no other guests present at the time. He later met Nikolay Zlatkov and Alex, describing all of them as “extremely erudite, well-read, captivating interlocutors.”

Donations and Support

The mayor acknowledged making a donation to the organization led by Ivaylo Kalushev, explaining he has supported numerous causes throughout his career, including health, education, disaster relief, hospitals, and churches. He stated he has donated “millions of my tax-paid money” over the years. Terziev clarified that the donation was made at the association’s request, and the funds were initially directed to Ivaylo Ivanov’s personal bank account, a request he found “satisfactory” at the time. He also noted he has supported hundreds of individuals, acknowledging that some may have disappointed him.

Observations at the Lodge

Terziev described the group as a “well-knit team,” noting a perceived hierarchy with Kalushev and Ivanov appearing to be in leadership positions. He observed the group as “disciplined and organized,” engaged in maintenance tasks, and observations. He denied seeing any weapons during his visits and stated he observed the group fencing off their property with materials typically used for livestock.

Call for Transparency and Avoiding Judgement

Terziev expressed concern over the slow release of information regarding the events, questioning why details were being revealed “hour by spoon” and why institutions hadn’t provided a clear timeline. He urged against hasty judgement, stating, “Let’s learn from our mistakes and not judge others too much.” He also noted that he had not been contacted by authorities for testimony as of the time of the interview.

Investigation and Future Actions

Terziev reiterated his call for an international investigation, emphasizing the need for objectivity and public reassurance. He acknowledged the various theories surrounding the deaths, including both suicide and murder, but refrained from commenting on speculation, preferring to await the findings of the authorities.
