Total Solar Eclipse Visible in Europe This August

This year’s biggest astronomical event is a solar eclipse. According to the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a partial eclipse will be visible as early as February 17th. Though, it will only be seen by people in Africa, South America, and Antarctica, or on more southerly islands in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans.

For the Czech Republic, a much more captivating event will occur on August 12th. Experts predict a total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of Europe for the first time since 1999. To experience the totality, you’ll need to travel to Spain or Iceland. Currently, hotels on the Iberian Peninsula are almost sold out or offer accommodation at extremely high prices.

Even from the Czech Republic, the phenomenon will be largely visible. Observers will see the Moon covering up to 86 percent of the solar disk. This is significantly more than coudl be watched last year, when the Earth’s satellite hid only 22 percent of the Sun.
