Songpa District Launches Healthy Meal Program to Combat Dietary Health Issues

Songpa District, Seoul, is actively addressing growing concerns about dietary health among its residents with the implementation of a “Low-Salt and Low-Sugar Healthy Meal Experience Class.” This resident-participatory nutrition education program aims to mitigate health problems stemming from excessive sodium and sugar intake.

Program Details and Structure

The experience class is being held in the shared kitchen of the Songpa Community Center in Geoyeo-dong. The program is structured as a three-session course, taking place every Friday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The initial session concluded on March 20, 2026, and a second session is scheduled from April 3rd to April 17th, 2026.

Curriculum and Activities

The program’s curriculum focuses on practical education and hands-on experience, including:

  • Comparison of sugar content in various fruits and beverages, alongside the exploration of alternative sweeteners.
  • Activities designed to enhance awareness of saltiness levels in food.
  • Instruction on creating natural seasonings.
  • Practical sessions focused on preparing healthy meals, such as tofu wrap vegetable rolls and spinach frittata.

Program Popularity and Expansion

Following a successful run in the previous year, the program has seen increased demand. Songpa-gu has limited duplicate participation to broaden access, prioritizing residents who did not participate in the previous year’s sessions. The current session is fully booked on a first-come, first-served basis.

Future Initiatives and Target Groups

Songpa-gu plans to expand the experiential classes in the second half of 2026 (October to November) to include children from underprivileged backgrounds, recognizing the importance of establishing healthy eating habits during formative years. This expansion is expected to contribute significantly to improving the overall dietary habits of residents and preventing chronic diseases like high blood pressure and obesity.

Mayor Seo Kang-seok’s Statement

“Healthy eating habits commence with small practices in daily life,” stated Seo Kang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu. “We will actively support residents in managing their sodium and sugar intake and maintaining a healthy eating lifestyle.”
