Sony FX2: Upcoming Firmware Update Promises Enhanced 4K Capabilities

Rumors suggest Sony is preparing a significant firmware update for its FX2 full-frame cinema camera, aiming to address criticisms and boost sales in a competitive market. The update, reportedly sourced from within Sony by Digital Camera World and Sony Alpha Rumors, focuses on improving 4K video recording and adding new features.

Addressing Crop Factor in 4K Recording

Currently, the Sony FX2 utilizes a Super 35 or 1.5x crop when recording 4K video at 60fps. The rumored firmware update introduces a 1.2x crop sensor mode, enabling 4K50p and 4K60p video with a reduced crop factor. This change will allow filmmakers to capture a wider field of view while maintaining high frame rate 4K resolution. In full-frame mode, the FX2 already supports 4K 30p with 7K oversampling.

Potential Addition of 4K120p Recording

Beyond the 1.2x crop mode, the update is also reportedly testing the stability of 4K120p recording. Currently, the FX2’s 120fps recording is limited to 1080p resolution. If implemented, 4K120p would significantly expand the camera’s sluggish-motion capabilities.

FX2: A Competitive Landscape

The Sony FX2 is positioned as the brand’s most affordable full-frame cinema camera. However, it faces competition from other cameras offering similar features at lower price points, such as the Panasonic Lumix S5 II, which is approximately $1,000 less expensive Digital Camera World reports. The Lumix S5 II offers a 24MP sensor and features like limitless 6K30p and 4K60p recording.

New Hardware: Tilting EVF

Alongside the potential firmware update, Sony announced on May 28, 2025, the release of a new FX2 model featuring a tilting electronic viewfinder (EVF) Sony Alpha Rumors. This new EVF mechanism mirrors technology Canon has been developing. The new model also boasts a 33MP sensor, the same BSI sensor found in the Sony A7 IV and A7c II.
