Sony Sells Extended Reality Patents to Meta Amid Hardware Shift

Sony has transferred hundreds of extended reality patents to Meta while scaling back its own PlayStation VR operations and shifting dormant game franchises to external studios.

According to USPTO records, Sony transferred 43 United States extended reality patents to Meta across three months last year: two in June, 20 in July, and 21 in September. Notebookcheck Magyarország noted that these patents cover virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems, along with head-mounted displays such as the PlayStation VR and Meta Quest series.

The initial American filings represent only a fraction of the broader transaction. Notebookcheck Magyarország reported that a formal agreement signed in December expands the deal to 419 patents globally. This total includes 119 U.S. patents alongside 300 equivalent patent families filed across Japan, China, South Korea, Europe, and other international jurisdictions.

Sony Cuts PlayStation VR2 Production as Meta Leads Market

The patent sale coincides with a cooling market for dedicated virtual reality hardware at Sony. Gamekapocs reported that the PlayStation VR2 failed to match the success of its predecessor. Despite subsequent PC support additions, Sony reduced manufacturing output, cut retail prices, and effectively wound down internal VR software development.

In contrast, Meta continues to invest in the virtual reality hardware ecosystem. Its Quest headset lineup remains a prominent force in consumer VR, retailing at competitive price points on platforms like Amazon, according to Notebookcheck Magyarország. Financial terms of the Sony patent acquisition remain undisclosed by both companies, leaving exact valuations and the future utility of the transferred intellectual property unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Sony and Meta Deal

What specific virtual reality patents did Sony sell to Meta?

The transaction covers 419 global patents related to virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies, including head-mounted display systems. United States Patent and Trademark Office records confirm that 43 of these are U.S.-specific grants transferred between June and September.

How does the deal affect current PlayStation VR2 owners?

Sony has not clarified whether the patent transfer impacts ongoing support for existing PlayStation VR2 hardware. However, public market adjustments include reduced manufacturing and price cuts following weaker sales figures compared to the original PlayStation VR.
