Sounders Open Season with Victory as Rothrock Shines After Morris Injury
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Sounders began their 2026 MLS season with a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday night, fueled by a strong performance from Paul Rothrock after an early injury to star forward Jordan Morris. The match, played in rainy conditions, saw Rothrock contribute a goal and an assist.
Morris Injury Sets the Stage for Rothrock
The Sounders suffered a setback just eight minutes into the game when Jordan Morris sustained a non-contact injury, forcing him off the field. Rothrock entered the match as a substitute and quickly made an impact, playing a key role in Albert Rusnák’s opening goal in the 15th minute. Rothrock kept the ball in play, setting up a header for Rusnák.
Controversial Calls and Debut Performances
Hassani Dotson, a free agent signing after seven seasons with Minnesota United, appeared to score in his Sounders debut just three minutes after Rusnák’s goal, but the goal was disallowed following a video review for a foul. Later in the first half, Colorado’s Noah Cobb received a yellow card after initially being shown a red, as well after video review.
Dotson later left the game with a head injury in stoppage time, being replaced by 18-year-old Snyder Brunell, who has made six appearances for the Sounders, including three starts, and scored two goals last season.
Rothrock Seals the Victory
Rothrock secured the win for Seattle in the 62nd minute, scoring an insurance goal with assists from Jesús Ferreira and Osaze De Rosario. This marked his 11th goal in 65 career appearances.
Defensive Strength and Goalkeeping
Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas recorded his fourth clean sheet in 26 career league starts, making four saves. Veteran Stefan Frei transitions to a backup role this season. Colorado’s Zack Steffen made three saves in his third season with the Rapids.
Looking Ahead
The Sounders will be on the road next Saturday, facing Real Salt Lake. Colorado will host the Portland Timbers on the same day. Seattle will not play another home match until April 12 due to stadium updates in preparation for the FIFA World Cup.
