South Africa Claims HSBC SVNS Series Title, Defeats Fiji in New York Final
New York City – South Africa’s Blitzboks secured both the gold medal at the HSBC SVNS New York 2026 and the overall HSBC SVNS Series title on Monday, defeating Fiji 10-7 in a thrilling final at Sports Illustrated Stadium RNZ. The victory marks South Africa’s seventh final win on US soil and their fourth tournament title this season, following wins in Cape Town, Perth, and Vancouver SVNS.
A Tense Final Showdown
With only two points separating the two sides in the HSBC SVNS Series standings heading into the final, the stakes were high. South Africa captain Impi Visser, in his 50th tournament on the global circuit, made a crucial play early on, pilfering possession from Fiji and setting up Gino Cupido for the opening try SVNS. Tristan Leyds later added a second try for the Blitzboks.
Fiji responded with a try from Terio Veilawa, but South Africa’s strong defensive effort held them off, securing a 10-7 victory RNZ. Despite the loss, Fiji achieved six podium finishes in six HSBC SVNS Series tournaments.
Blitzboks Secure Series Championship
South Africa finished the HSBC SVNS Series with 106 points, two points ahead of Fiji’s 104 RNZ. HSBC Sevens Player of the Final, Selvyn Davids, praised his team’s performance, stating, “What a performance! We stuck to our guns because we knew Fiji were going to be physical, but thankfully we came out on top.” SVNS. Captain Visser added, “It was a massive defensive effort and testament to all our hard perform.” SVNS.
