South African Weather Service Raises KwaZulu-Natal Storm Alert to Level 4
The South African Weather Service escalated its severe weather warnings across multiple provinces, placing KwaZulu-Natal on a level 4 alert for disruptive storms and heavy downpours. The updated warning covers Tuesday, 27 October, and extends into Wednesday, bringing severe risks of flooding and infrastructure damage to the region.
Forecasters warn that heavy downpours, hail, and severe lightning will likely impact settlements, roads, and bridges throughout KwaZulu-Natal. The eThekwini Municipality placed its Disaster Management and Emergency Services teams on standby as the system moves across the area. Vincent Ngubane, the director of the eThekwini Disaster Management Directorate, urged residents in low-lying areas and informal settlements to treat the alerts with extreme caution.
Emergency Precautions and Travel Restrictions in eThekwini
Officials issued strict safety guidelines for residents caught in the path of the severe weather. Municipal disaster teams advise motorists and pedestrians to avoid unnecessary travel and never attempt to cross flooded roads or swollen rivers.
- Stay indoors and off the roads whenever possible.
- Never cross rivers, streams, or roads where water rises above ankle height.
- Abandon vehicles and move to higher ground if trapped by rising floodwaters.
- Move valuable items above expected flood levels inside homes and businesses.
- Keep children away from rivers, streams, and stormwater drains.
- Avoid open spaces and tall trees during active lightning storms.
Concurrent Level 2 Weather Warnings Across Three Provinces
Alongside the severe level 4 escalation in KwaZulu-Natal, the weather service maintained level 2 weather alerts for three additional provinces. The Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and the lower reaches of Limpopo face concurrent risks from heavy rainfall.
The level 2 warnings highlight threats of localized flooding on roads, bridges, and in low-lying settlements. Authorities note that the inclement weather may also trigger localized power outages, disruptions to telecommunications, and delays in municipal services due to heavy lightning activity.
