Ryanair and British Airways flights cancelled as Santiago de Compostela Airport closes for runway resurfacing Ryanair and British Airways passengers face significant disruption as Santiago de Compostela Airport in northwest Spain prepares to shut down for over a month to allow for essential runway resurfacing works. The airport, operated by Aena, will close completely from 23 April to 27 May 2026, with all flights cancelled during this period. The closure impacts approximately 30 weekly flights from the UK, including regular services from London Stansted, Gatwick and Heathrow. Airlines serving the route include Vueling, Ryanair, Iberia and British Airways, with each aircraft typically carrying an average of 180 passengers. This equates to around 5,400 British travellers potentially affected each week, according to reports from The Sun. Aena confirmed the shutdown in an official statement on its website, stating the airport “will be closed from 23 April to 27 May 2026 for runway resurfacing works” and that “during this period, the airport will be closed to all air traffic and no takeoffs or landings will take place.” Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines directly for information on flight status, schedule changes or rebooking options. Alternative routes within Spain, such as to Barcelona and Madrid, remain available from the airport outside of the maintenance window.
