However, access to this new “About the Song” feature is reserved exclusively for Spotify Premium subscribers. Non-paying users will not be able to use this new functionality. It is currently rolling out for Android and iOS devices and is initially available in key markets including the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. This strategic move reinforces Spotify’s commitment to providing significant benefits to its paying customer base and encouraging free users to upgrade for a richer, more immersive listening experience.

In contrast, YouTube Music appears to be taking a different strategy, moving formerly free features to its premium-only tier. Reports from 9to5Google suggest that the ability to view lyrics while listening to tracks has largely disappeared behind a paywall. Previously available to all users, non-paying people are now reportedly limited to viewing lyrics for just five songs before the feature becomes inaccessible. Although YouTube Music hasn’t made an official announcement about this specific change, unlike Spotify’s “About the Song” launch, it is widely interpreted as a direct attempt to encourage more users to subscribe to YouTube Music Premium. It’s worth noting that a YouTube Premium subscription also includes YouTube Music Premium, providing an alternative route for users seeking these features.

This lyric restriction has reportedly been in testing for some time and now appears to be reaching a wider audience. These early tests are expected to have generated sufficient subscription conversions to warrant broader implementation. This move by YouTube Music is particularly notable because lyrics remain a completely free feature on Spotify, which could potentially create a point of friction for YouTube Music users who were accustomed to free access.
