The president of the United States, Donald Trump, presented on Thursday a new website that bears his name and that promises to facilitate access to medicines with significant discounts, in a country where the cost of these products is among the highest in the world.
President Trump launched a platform to sell medicines
The platform, called ‘TrumpRx’, will offer discounts that, according to the president, can exceed 80% of the current price. To achieve this, his administration signed agreements with a dozen pharmaceutical laboratories.
“Starting tonight, dozens of the most commonly used prescription drugs will be available at drastic discounts to all consumers,” Trump said from the White House.
The president also asserted that for years Americans have paid the highest drug prices globally and maintained that, in practice, the country was subsidizing the cost of these products for other nations.
The portal begins operations with discounts on more than 40 popular medications, including anti-obesity treatments.
Trump noted that the drug Ozempic, from the Novo Nordisk laboratory, would reduce its price from $1,000 to $199. Similarly, Wegovy, from Eli Lilly, would go from $1,300 to $199.
However, he warned that these values will begin to increase after two months.
The initiative is part of the president’s efforts to respond to voters’ discomfort with the cost of living, a key issue ahead of the November midterm elections.
In these elections, Republicans, Trump’s co-partisans, face the risk of losing control of Congress.
