Spotify Implements QR Code Verification for Family Plans

Spotify has introduced a mandatory QR code verification system for its Premium Family plan subscribers to ensure all account members reside at the same physical address. The enforcement mechanism requires subsidiary plan members to scan a rapidly refreshing QR code directly from the plan manager’s phone while physically present with them.

The update targets account sharing outside single households, following similar password-sharing crackdowns across the streaming industry. The company details the feature on its official support page, marking a significant escalation from its previous address-based confirmation checks.

Plan Managers Generate QR Codes for Member Verification

The verification process must be completed through the mobile app. To generate the code, the plan manager taps their profile picture, selects Your Premium, and goes to Manage. The subsidiary member must then use their phone camera to scan the code in person. Users who receive a prompt must complete the scan within a seven-day window. Because the QR code refreshes every few seconds, static screenshots might only work if the plan member acts quickly.

Consequences of Missing Verification

Failing to complete the verification within the seven-day window triggers strict penalties. Accounts that miss the deadline are automatically demoted to Spotify’s free tier, stripping away Premium access without a grace period.

Affected users face a 12-month restriction preventing them from joining any other Family or Duo plan from the date of the failed verification. During this 12-month period, users can still subscribe independently to Spotify’s Individual Premium tier.

Bypass Methods Discovered by Users

Subscribers on Reddit quickly discovered technical workarounds to evade the co-presence requirement. Users found that plan managers can generate the QR code and display it over a live video call. The remote plan member can then scan the video feed using a second device.

Executing this workaround requires precise timing due to the rapidly refreshing code and a stable video connection. Spotify has not publicly addressed whether it plans to close this video-call loophole.
