Spotify’s SongDNA: Unveiling the Creative Web Behind Your Favorite Tracks

Spotify has launched SongDNA, a new feature for Premium users that provides an immersive look into the creative process behind songs. Rolling out globally, SongDNA allows listeners to explore the collaborators, samples, interpolations, and covers associated with their favorite music, fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of the music landscape.

How SongDNA Works

Accessible through the Now Playing view in the Spotify mobile app, SongDNA is designed to be intuitive. Users can access the feature by following these steps:

  1. While listening to a song, open the Now Playing view.
  2. Scroll down to find the SongDNA card on supported tracks.
  3. Tap the card to reveal collaborators, samples, interpolations, and covers, with links to explore further.

Deeper Exploration of Musical Connections

SongDNA goes beyond simply listing credits. It allows users to navigate between artists and tracks, discovering how different musicians have influenced each other and contributed to the music they love. This interactive experience aims to highlight the often-hidden relationships between artists, eras, and genres. Spotify explains that users can tap into any creator to discover other artists they’ve worked with, creating a network of musical connections.

Empowering the Creative Community

The feature isn’t just for listeners. Spotify emphasizes that SongDNA offers a new way for fans to engage with the work of artists, songwriters, producers, composers, and engineers. Spotify notes that artists and labels can review and manage the information displayed in SongDNA through Spotify for Artists, ensuring accuracy and control over their musical story.

Built on Data and Community

The connections visualized in SongDNA are powered by a combination of information provided directly by artists and their teams, supplemented by community-sourced data. TechCrunch reports that the feature was built, in part, on data from WhoSampled, a music database Spotify acquired last year.

Beyond Credits: A Complementary Feature

SongDNA is designed to complement existing features like “About the Song,” offering a more interactive and exploratory experience. 9to5Google highlights that SongDNA expands on the existing features, allowing users to learn more about the writers, producers, and collaborators behind their favorite music.

Availability

SongDNA is currently available in beta to all Premium subscribers on mobile apps, with a full launch planned for April. 9to5Google
