Confucius Institute at the University of Gdansk Celebrates Spring Festival
GDANSK, Poland – The Confucius Institute at the University of Gdansk in northern Poland hosted its 11th annual Spring Festival gala on Saturday, February 28, 2026, celebrating the Year of the Horse and fostering cultural exchange between Poland and China. The event drew hundreds of participants eager to experience Chinese culture.
A Blend of Polish and Chinese Arts
The gala featured a diverse program showcasing both Polish and Chinese artistic traditions. Performances included contributions from University of Gdansk choirs and folk dancers, alongside presentations by winners of the “Chinese Bridge” contest, teachers from the institute, and Chinese students. This collaborative approach highlighted the harmonious blend of cultures.
Tai Chi Demonstration Highlights Traditional Martial Arts
A notable moment of the evening was a Chen-style Tai Chi demonstration led by Pawel Antonowicz, Vice Rector of the University of Gdansk. Antonowicz, who has practiced Chinese martial arts for nearly 35 years, emphasized the art form’s focus on strength, fluidity, and harmony. He expressed his pleasure in training with Chinese friends and promoting these traditions within Poland.
Institute’s Impact and Growth
According to Guan Yu, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute, the Spring Festival gala has become a well-recognized cultural event in the region. Since its establishment in 2015, the institute has made significant contributions to cultural exchange and language learning. To date, the Confucius Institute at the University of Gdansk has taught over 7,000 students, hosted more than 200 cultural events, and administered 26 Chinese proficiency tests.
