Square Enix Assigns Dedicated Porting Teams to Final Fantasy VII Revelation for Switch 2 and Xbox Series S
Square Enix has formed a specialized, separate development division to handle performance optimization for Final Fantasy VII Revelation across multiple platforms, aiming to ensure the upcoming game runs smoothly on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series S without forcing the core team to compromise the game’s ambition. Bringing a massive role-playing game to hardware with varying technical capabilities presents distinct engineering hurdles.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained in an interview with RPG Site that the internal development structure splits responsibilities so that one group concentrates purely on core gameplay mechanics while a separate unit handles all porting and multiplatform performance adjustments. This approach prevents hardware restrictions on less powerful devices from dictating the design choices made by the main developers building the title for powerful platforms like the PlayStation 5 and PC.
Technical Adjustments and Hardware Scope for Final Fantasy VII Revelation
The multiplatform optimization strategy is not a new workflow for the publisher, as Square Enix utilized a similar dedicated port team during the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Experience gained from bringing Rebirth to the Nintendo Switch 2 provides foundational data for handling the expansive world exploration planned for Revelation. The secondary engineering unit adjusts polygon counts, textures, shading, and asset streaming to fit each specific console profile.
Square Enix announced high-performance graphical support for the title on the PlayStation 5 Pro, utilizing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology to achieve 4K visuals at 60 frames per second. Producer Naoki Hamaguchi highlighted PSSR as an intelligent image reconstruction method that enhances visual sharpness without overburdening console hardware.
PS5 Players Choose Graphics Modes and Need 200GB Storage
Players choosing the standard PlayStation 5 console can select a dedicated Graphics Mode for native 4K resolution, or choose between two Performance Mode options designated as Sharp and Smooth, according to reports from Gamescom demos. The scope of the game’s expansive world requires massive data storage, demanding up to 200 gigabytes of free space on console hard drives to accommodate high-resolution assets and detailed environments.
Square Enix has scheduled the official release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation for 2027. While performance on entry-level multiplatform hardware remains to be fully evaluated by consumers ahead of launch, the studio’s parallel engineering structure aims to maintain high technical standards across every supported device.
