Star Wars Battlefront 2 Galactic Conquest Gets Online Play
More than two decades after its initial release, the 2005 PC classic Star Wars: Battlefront II now features fully playable online multiplayer for its fan-favorite Galactic Conquest mode. Trauntrow released the free mod, titled Galactic Conquest Together, on Nexus Mods and ModDB. The add-on introduces two-player online co-op and versus matches to the iconic sci-fi shooter.
How the Galactic Conquest Together Mod Works
The modification bridges a long-standing gap in the title by allowing two users to play an entire campaign together over the internet. In co-op mode, one player manages the strategic map—handling fleet movements and purchasing upgrades—while their partner’s screen mirrors those actions in real time. Both participants then load directly into the same matches to fight side by side. Alternatively, the competitive versus mode lets each person control a rival faction, taking turns on the galaxy map before facing off in combat. The project utilizes Steam invites, eliminating the need for dedicated servers or manual port forwarding. Players can also save and load their campaign progress between sessions.
Online Functionality Requires Steam Release and 1.3 Patch
The new online functionality is exclusive to the Steam release of the 2005 title. It does not support EA’s 2017 reboot or the 2024 Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection. Both participants must also have the unofficial 1.3 patch installed. Trauntrow warned on Reddit that occasional crashes and synchronization issues can still occur during matches.
Fan Reception and the 2024 Classic Collection Contrast
Player reactions highlighted a deep demand for online capabilities that official re-releases omitted. Aspyr’s 2024 Classic Collection drew heavy criticism and a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating on Steam, partly because it failed to deliver online support for the cherished game mode. While the community-built mod requires minor troubleshooting and currently limits matches to two users, it provides an option that official channels did not. When announcing the mod on Reddit under the username u/Hunterbing, Trauntrow addressed questions regarding the player count, noting that the current maximum is two players, though increasing it is being looked into. One user responded on Reddit by stating, Either way, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for my whole life!!
Another user remarked, I’m honestly surprised it took someone 25 years to implement something like this. Awesome stuff.
On a separate Reddit thread concerning Aspyr, a disappointed player complained in the main post, saying, It’s literally all I wanted out of the title….There’s been nothing but time to find a working fix, but they deducted to use AI to do their upscaling for them.
That same user added, I don’t know what I was even expecting.
Granted, Trauntrow’s project still isn’t guaranteed to run perfectly compared to how a dedicated, officially made version might have, but it’s better than nothing at all for now.
