Starfield Lands on PlayStation 5 in April, Tops PS Store Pre-Orders
Bethesda’s highly anticipated space RPG, Starfield, is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, and has already become the top pre-ordered game on the PlayStation Store, surpassing titles like LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Saros. Bethesda announced the release date alongside a major new update for the game.
PlayStation Debut After Xbox and PC Release
Starfield initially launched in September 2023 on Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game’s arrival on PS5 marks a shift, following initial expectations that it would remain exclusive to Xbox platforms after Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. Reports indicate that pre-orders for the PS5 version will not include an early access period, unlike the original release.
Strong Pre-Order Demand
Despite being released over two years after its initial launch and carrying a full price of $70, Starfield is experiencing significant pre-order demand on PS5. As of November 2024, the game had attracted approximately 15 million players across Xbox and PC. Bethesda has not released detailed sales figures due to the game’s availability on Xbox Game Pass.
Potential for Higher Sales on PS5
Analysts suggest that Starfield may achieve higher sales on PS5 compared to Xbox Series X, primarily due to the larger install base of PS5 consoles. There are at least two PS5s in the market for every one Xbox Series X.
Starfield Updates and DLC
The PS5 release coincides with the launch of the “Free Lanes” update, Bethesda’s largest free update for Starfield, which includes improvements to exploration, customization, and combat. The “Terran Armada” DLC offers a new story campaign, new technology, and a new companion. Bethesda has as well completed the Trackers Alliance bounty series, adding five new high-value targets to the game.
Looking Ahead
The release of Starfield on PS5 expands the game’s reach to a wider audience and demonstrates a potential shift in Bethesda’s platform strategy. The success of the PS5 version will be closely watched as an indicator of future releases.
