Symptoms of Measles

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure and include:

  • Fever of 38.3°C or higher
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • A rash that begins behind the ears and on the face, then spreads down the body. The rash may appear red and blotchy on lighter skin tones, or purple or darker than surrounding skin on darker skin tones.

What to Do If You Suspect Exposure

Individuals who were present at the identified locations during the specified times and who are unsure of their immunization status, or were born in or after 1970 and have not received two doses of measles-containing vaccine, should:

  • Monitor for symptoms of measles.
  • Contact the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any healthcare facility, including a family physician clinic or pharmacy, if symptoms develop.

Measles Vaccination

The measles vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection and complications. In Alberta, the measles vaccine is available free of charge through the publicly funded immunization program. The recommended schedule is two doses, the first at one year of age and the second at 18 months.

If you believe you may have been exposed and are not protected against measles, a dose of vaccine can be administered within 72 hours of exposure to potentially prevent infection. Infants under one year of age, individuals with severely weakened immune systems, and pregnant individuals may be eligible for immunoglobulin within six days of exposure. Contact the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 for more information.

Albertans can check their immunization records by calling the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434. Individuals 14 years of age and older can also check their immunization history using My Health Record. Text “Measles” to 88111 to receive measles health information on your mobile device.
