Starlink Surpasses 10,000 Satellites, Widening Lead in Space Race
Starlink has achieved a significant milestone, solidifying its position as a leader in the satellite internet constellation market. As of March 13, 2026, the company has deployed over 10,000 satellites into orbit, according to space monitoring startup LookUp . This achievement significantly distances Starlink from its competitors, including those in China and Europe.
Current Constellation Sizes
The latest launch from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California brought the total number of operational Starlink satellites to 10,003. In comparison, OneWeb currently operates 651 satellites, whereas Amazon’s Kuiper project has deployed 210 satellites. Chinese competitors, Guo Wang and Qian Fan, have 154 and 108 satellites in orbit, respectively.
Strategic Implications of Low Earth Orbit Dominance
This milestone demonstrates the capability of a private entity to significantly shape activity in low Earth orbit (LEO), according to LookUp co-founder and former French space commander Michel Friedling. The growing size of these megaconstellations raises strategic issues related to national sovereignty, as control over LEO is increasingly recognized as a central lever in the global economy and geopolitics.
Space Traffic Monitoring and Analysis
The figures are tracked by Synapse, a space traffic monitoring and analysis platform developed by LookUp. Synapse combines publicly available and proprietary orbital data with Starlink announcements, accounting for inactive satellites and the company’s own observations. LookUp is currently deploying a global radar network to enhance space traffic monitoring capabilities.
Recent Vandenberg Launches
SpaceX is actively launching Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. On March 20, 2026, a Falcon 9 rocket launched 25 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit . The U.S. Space Force supported the launch from Space Launch Complex 4 East . The first stage booster returned to land on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship in the Pacific Ocean for later retrieval.
Potential Sonic Booms
Residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may experience sonic booms during launches, depending on weather conditions .
How to Watch SpaceX Launches
SpaceX webcasts of launches are accessible on their website , on X (formerly Twitter) @SpaceX, and via the X TV app. Webcasts typically begin about five minutes before liftoff.
